Some of the etiquette rules are purely superstitious and other etiquette rules allow the game to flow more smoothly.
Here are a few of the superstitious etiquette rules in craps:
- Never, ever, say the word ‘seven' at a craps table. It is considered very bad luck. If you absolutely need to speak the word, say ‘six ace' or even ‘big red.'
- A player should never handle the dice with both hands. Keep the dice in one hand. Never bring the dice over the edge of the craps table.
- The dice should be thrown underhanded only with an upward flexing of the wrist. This throw is called “feeding chickens” and is done with one hand, of course. The dice must also hit the farthest side of the craps table from where the thrower is standing.
- Some players do believe that talking straight to them is considered bad luck. Make sure you are aware of this and don't strike up a conversation with someone unless you've seen them talking to other people around the table.
These are several of the etiquette rules that allow the game to continue as quickly and smoothly as possible:
- Never let your hands interfere with a roll of the dice.
- To make a center bet, throw your chips into the middle of the table and tell the stickman where to place them.
- Make your bets and collect your winnings as quickly as possible to not interfere with the game or the shooter.
- If you don't act promptly, your winnings will be considered a bet for the next game so grab them quickly if you don't intend to play another round.
- Place tips for the dealer next to the pass line to avoid interrupting the game. An additional tipping option is to place $1 or more on a bet and say ‘for they boys.' The dealer's tip will be the winnings from that bet.
- Never hold your drink above the table, it might spill. There is a lip underneath the table constructed to hold drinks, put your glasses there.
- Don't lean on the table. If you don't have the energy to stand and still want to play, try and find ‘seated craps tables.'
