Craps Glossary

Trying to figure out the craps table for the first time might feel like you're reading a foreign language but craps really does have a language all its own. Knowing the following terms will make you feel like you're coming home when you get to the craps table, instead of disembarking in a strange, foreign country with lots of excitable people shouting in tongue.


Advantage
The edge that a casino has over the players in a game. In craps, the advantage varies between the different betting options. The advantage is sometimes referred to as the house advantage, the house edge or the casino advantage.

  
Bar the 12
Shown on the table layout in the Don't Pass Line and Don't Come Box options, usually symbolized by two sixes on a pair of dice. The twelve guarantees the casino advantage over wrong bettors.

Betting Right
Betting that the dice will pass, also referred to as betting with the dice.

Betting Wrong
Betting that the dice won't pass, also referred to as betting against the dice.

Box Numbers
The area used to show the point, and where place, come, and buy bets are placed. On the table, it is the box area surrounding the numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10.

Boxcars
The word craps players use when the dice roll is 12.

Boxman
The employee overseeing the craps game. He/she is always seated behind the casino chips during game play.

Bring Out
An expression used by players when they want to “bring out” the hardway of the point on the next dice roll.

Buy Bets
The 5 percent commission paid to the casino to receive the correct odds for a bet.

Center Bets
The betting options available on the central area of the table layout.

Choppy Dice
A pair of dice that is continuously hitting random numbers, like rolling craps and then hitting a 7 on the come out roll. A table can also be referred to as a choppy table for inconsistent winning and losing games.

Cold Dice
The expression for dice that continuously don't pass.

Color Change
Lowering or raising your chip color to a higher or lower level.

Come Box
On the table layout, the area where a come bet is placed.

Come Out Roll
The first roll in a craps game, prior to the establishment of the point.

Coming Out
The expression used for when the come out roll is about to occur.

Correct Odds
The mathematical probability that a bet has of winning.

Crap Out
Throwing an automatic loss - a craps - on the come out roll and making all bets on the pass line lose.

Craps
The word used for rolling a 2, 3, or 12 in the game, in addition to being the name of the game.

Crew
The reference to the four employees in a casino that work around an individual craps table, including two dealers, a boxman and a stickman.

Dealer
The employee directly working with the craps players and handling the banking actions.

Dice Pass
The expression for when the dice "pass" in a craps game. A pass refers to when the dice roll a 7 or 11 in the come out.

round. Die
A cubical-shaped object with six sides and with every side numbered from 1 to 6. A pair of dice, the plural of die, is used in craps and the results from the dice rolls determine winning and losing bets in the casino game.

Don't Come Box
On the table layout, the area where players place a Don't Come bet.

Dont
A craps strategy that uses a system of Pass and Don't pass bets.

Don't Pass Line
On the table layout, the area where a Don't Pass bet is place.

Easy Way
Rolling a 4, 6, 8, or 10 when the dice aren't a matching pair. Rolling a 3+1 as a four would be an easy way roll, whereas a 2+2 roll would be considered a hardway roll.

Even Money
When the payout on a bet is 1:1.

Floorman
One of the casino crew, the employee that stands behind the table. He/she authorizes credits for the players and watches over the game.

Free Odds Bet
An odds bet in which the casino has no advantage over the players.

Front Line
Another name for the Pass Line on the table layout.

Hardway
When a pair of dice roll a 4, 6, 8, or 10 with a matching pair. A 2+2 roll is the hardway roll of a 4. Whereas a 3+1 is referred to as an easy way roll.

Hot Roll
When a shooter is continuously passing and the point round lasts for a long time before the end of the game.

Inside Numbers
The numbers 5, 6, 8, and 9 are called the inside numbers when a player wants to make a bet on one of them.

Layout
The felt on the craps table that shows the various betting options in craps and where the players place the actual bets they want to make.

Line Bet
The way a Pass Line or Don't Pass Line bet is referred to sometimes in a game.

Loaded Dice
Corrupted dice that have been tampered or weighted with to change the outcome of a roll.

Max Bet
The highest, maximum, bet a player can make in a game.

Minimum Bet
The lowest, minimum, bet a player can make in a game.

Natural
Word used for a 7 or 11 roll in the come out round.

Odds
The mathematical probability of an event or outcome in a game.

Off
The side of the puck that shows that a bet is not working on a specific roll.

On
The side of the puck that shows that a bet is working on a specific roll.

On Base
Expression used for the casino dealers that must stand, excluding the stick man.

On the Stick
When a crew member is the stickman, players use the expression that he is 'on the stick.'

Parlay
Word used to describe a bet increase, also referred to as a 'press.'

Pass
When a winning move is made in craps by rolling the point in the second round or rolling a 7 or 11 in the first round.

Pass Line
On the table layout, the area where the pass line bets are placed.

Pass Line Bet
A bet that the dice will pass, also referred to as betting with the dice.

Payoff
The term used for when a player receives a winning bet from the casino.

Pit
The closed off area in a casino around the craps game tables. Certain crew members, called Floormen, supervise the games, players and the employees at all time in the pit.

Pit Boss
The crew member that supervises all the craps tables in an area of the casino.

Player
An additional word for a gambler or bettor.

Point
On the come out roll, the numbers 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, and 10 are called the points. When rolled, a point number leads the craps game into the second stage of the game, called the point round.

Puck
Two-sided round disk used to show the two stages of the game by an "on" and "off" side. Also used to show the point in the second stage of the game.

Rails
The raised edge area surrounding the inside felt part of the craps table where players can place their chips when they aren't wagering them in the game.

Right Bettors
Players that bet on the dice passing, also referred to as betting with the dice.

Roll
One throw of the dice.

Seven Out
Throwing a 7 after the point is established causing a dice loss and the round to end.

Shoot
The multiple rolls before the round ends with a seven out.

Shooter
Craps player that is throwing the dice and making the wins and losses in that specific game.

Snake Eyes
Craps term for the number 2.

Standoff
When there is no result from a throw of the dice for a specific bet.

Stickman
The crew member at the casino handling the stick and calling the game at a craps table.

Take the Odds
Making a free odds bet as a right bettor to get more than even money on a win bet.

Toke
The tip that players give to a casino dealer.

True Odds
The odds of a specific number being rolled on the dice.

Unit
A way to measure different bet sizes.

Working
The word used to mean that the game and bets are all on and payoffs will be made after the next dice throw.

Wrong Bettors
The expression used for players that bet Don't Pass, also referred to as a betting against the dice.

Yo
The word used by craps players for the number 11.
